Understanding the Journey of Human Suffering

Since we were born, each of us has looked at the world around us, focusing on external things. This process leads to the development of desires, anger, aims, and objectives. Throughout life, we chase these and other false positions, which is the root cause of our suffering and a myriad of problems.

To overcome this suffering, we often blame others and avoid problems that we are deep within ourselves. However, the key to solving all these issues lies in meditation. Meditation requires focus to be placed within ourselves, directing attention to our organs and thoughts within the mind. This process helps the mind become free from stored information, relieving us of tensions, disturbances, and other mental problems.

The Meditative Journey to Silence

Through gradual practice, one reaches a state of silence and calm. Unlike other forms of meditation, Vipassana practitioners do not focus on achieving silence but rather allow it to naturally arise. Vipassana meditation is a non-doing practice, where no effort is consciously made during the process. Rather, the practitioner follows instructions only, allowing the mind to naturally quiet itself.

It's important to note that Vipassana practitioners do not focus on silence itself but rather on understanding the nature of the mind. Over time, this practice leads to a state of inner silence as a natural result, rather than an intentional effort.

The Quest for Freedom from Suffering

The journey of understanding and achieving inner peace begins with a great quest, inspired by Lord Buddha. His aim was to find a solution that could end the sufferings of all beings. After witnessing an old man, a diseased person, a decaying corpse, and an ascetic, Lord Buddha realized that every living being, regardless of their wealth or status, is inevitably affected by old age, sickness, and death. Material comforts could not end suffering.

Buddha experimented with various methods to attain self-realization, including fasts, penances, and austerities. Despite these efforts, he found that he was still not liberated from misery. He then embarked on his own research and discovered Vipassana, which helped him eradicate misery and attain full enlightenment.

Why Focus on Meditation and Silence?

Buddha discovered that the solution lies in facing and understanding one's own reality. Techniques that merely divert the mind from existing misery to another object, such as external experiences or discourses, only provide temporary relief. Vipassana delves deeper by observing the true nature of the mind and body.

Meditation and silence encompass exploring the reality within oneself. This involves using the body and mind directly, rather than relying on the experiences of others. By practicing Vipassana, one can observe the truth moment-to-moment, without any preconceived notions or expectations. This process helps in understanding the interconnectedness of mind and body.
