Ice Packs: Start with an ice pack on the masseter muscles to cool and deactivate them. You can make a makeshift ice pack by putting ice and water into freezer storage baggies and applying them to both sides of your face. Add a few ounces of dill pickle juice, a teaspoon of mustard, or tonic water for additional muscle relaxation. Massage: Find the tenderest areas on each side of your face using your index finger. Massage each spot for one minute and then move to the next one. Do this every hour until you have massaged multiple spots. Mild Exercises: Gradually introduce very mild exercises. Place a finger from each hand between your front teeth, and gently bite down with pressure. Carefully try to pull your mouth open with the pressure of your fingers but avoid opening widely. Over time, you may find that your mouth can open more without discomfort.
