It is quite common to shed up to 100 hairs per day as part of the hair growth cycle. However, noticeable thinning or bald patches may indicate a more serious issue. It's important to be aware of changes in your hair density and to consult a dermatologist if you are concerned. They can evaluate your scalp health and recommend appropriate treatments or lifestyle adjustments.

Distinguishing Visible and Invisible Hair Loss

There are two types of hair loss: visible and invisible. The hair strands you see in the sink or brush are within the normal range. This occurs when the hair follicle becomes inactive and enters a dormant phase for 3 to 4 months, after which the growth cycle resumes. However, hair loss, which is not visible, involves the miniaturization of the hair follicle. As the follicle atrophies, the hair becomes progressively thinner until it disappears.

Identifying Excessive Hair Loss

If you have 5 to 8 hair strands in your hair, it is considered normal hair fall. However, if you lose about 15 to 20 hair strands, this indicates abnormal hair fall. Additional causes of hair loss include stress, poor diet, and underlying medical conditions. It's important to be aware that everyone experiences hair shedding, and it typically occurs to each of us every day, with an average of 50 to 100 hairs being shed daily as part of this natural cycle.

Managing Hair Loss with Lifestyle Adjustments

Dr. Heather Woolery-Lloyd, a dermatologist based in Miami Beach, Florida, suggests that these changes can be managed by altering your relationship with your hair. Dermatologists have identified four common signs of aging hair and have recommended various treatments for them.

Going Gray

The appearance of a first white strand is a sign of gray hair. Most people notice their first silver hair in their 30s, and many by their 40s. In 2015, L'Oréal announced that they would be releasing a silver hair fix pill, but it was described as a supplement to prevent hair from darkening and not to reverse gray hair. There is nothing wrong with having silver strands.

Hair Miniaturization (Thinning)

Another common physical change is hair thinning. Dr. Woolery-Lloyd recommends using myoxin to address this issue.

Dry Hair

To combat dry hair, Dr. Woolery-Lloyd advises using oil in your hair. Argan oil is extremely hydrating and can be found in various hair products.

Weak Hair

For weak hair, Dr. Woolery-Lloyd recommends giving your strands TLC (tender, loving care) by avoiding harsh chemicals and using protein-rich hair treatments. Additionally, she suggests taking a hair nutrient supplement with biotin and silica to help strengthen your hair. Biotin is essential, and 3,000 mg per day is recommended. Silica strengthens collagen and has been shown to reinforce current hair. Hair grows one centimeter per month, so it can take up to six months to see the effects of hair nutrients.
