Transition and Faith: A Christian MTFs Spiritual Journey
Transition and Faith: A Christian MTF's Spiritual Journey
As a Christian transitioning from male to female (MTF), the journey towards embracing my true self has been both challenging and transformative. My experience of transition has not only brought me closer to my faith but has also highlighted the true meaning of following Christ and suffering for His sake.
Philippians 3:10 and the Path of Faith
Philippians 3:10 teaches that true gain and fortune come from knowing Christ Jesus, the master of all things. This verse resonates deeply with me as I navigate the complexities of my transition. It emphasizes the importance of spiritual wealth over material possessions. I've come to understand that:
The pursuit of Christ is greater than any earthly gain. Faith in Christ provides a righteousness derived from trust rather than from legalistic practices. The true experience of Christ is knowing Him, experiencing the power of His resurrection, and sharing in His suffering. Conforming to His death and resurrection can lead to new life. These verses have provided me with the strength and guidance to continue on this difficult journey.
Rejection and Persecution in the Christian Community
When I came out as transgender to my long-time church, I was met with a sharp departure from the warmth and acceptance I had enjoyed. It was like all the masks came off, and they started with no punches spared. The church, which I considered my community, responded with:
Security Measures: They assigned two-person security teams to follow me everywhere, even into the restroom. Board of Elders Meeting: I was pressured to meet with the board of elders, a move that felt like an ambush. Insults and Lies: My family was told that I am actually a gay man who had never been attracted to women and had slept with others, which was not true. Advocacy for Psychiatric Care: My wife was advised to have me treated in a psychiatric facility, a suggestion that felt like a violation of my right to privacy and dignity. This experience was a wake-up call, as I realized the consequences of being a transgender Christian in a socially conservative environment. Prior to this, I had believed that I was respected and valued. However, this incident underscored that sometimes, even within the community, religious zealots can be as harsh as those in biblical times. The experience of fellowship of His sufferings was a sobering reality.
Conclusion: Closer to Jesus
Though these trials were challenging, they ultimately brought me closer to Jesus. My faith in Him was tested, and I emerged with a deeper understanding of His true nature and the significance of loving others, even when they reject us. Through this experience, I gained a more profound appreciation for the promises of His Word. The promise that He would do no less to those who stand with Him in His suffering rings true in this transformative journey.
