For instance, your grandmother may not have partaken in drugs or alcohol, yet faced significant health challenges in her later years. This article draws upon the experiences of a 83-year-old man who committed to a drug-free lifestyle, serving others through athletic pursuits and international work.
A Personal Journey to a Drug-Free Life
At the age of 15, I, a 83-year-old man from Canada, questioned the long-term benefits of living without drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. My response was to embrace Jesus, maintain a strong body, and live a meaningful life. This decision led me to win the best senior boy athlete award in Ireland and to prepare for a meaningful career working among dysfunctional families in Thailand and Cambodia.
I spent 27 years in Thailand and 25 years in Cambodia, all dedicated to helping others. Upon retiring at 78, I felt a profound sense of fulfillment, gratitude, and contentment with the life I had lived. Today, I continue to look forward to meeting Jesus in God's world, having lived a purposeful life.
Why a Drug-Free Life is a Healthy Choice
A drug-free lifestyle generally promotes better health. However, it's crucial to understand that the term "drugs" can be somewhat ambiguous. For example, caffeine is often included in this category, found in popular drinks such as coffee, tea, guaraná, and Coca-Cola. While a drug-free lifestyle is beneficial, it's not a guarantee against illness. Smoking, for instance, increases the likelihood of cancer but does not completely eliminate the risk if one abstains from it.
No Drugs, No Coffee, Tea, Aspirin, or NyQuil: A Tough Yet Rewarding Road
A drug-free lifestyle can be challenging, as it includes abstaining from a wide range of substances, including caffeine. This can be difficult to maintain but offers several health benefits. For those seeking like-minded individuals, the Mormon community often aligns with similar values and beliefs.
Regular Exercise and a Balanced Diet for Long-Term Health
A healthy lifestyle is more about consistent choices rather than occasional prohibitions. While avoiding drugs, alcohol, and tobacco is beneficial, maintaining a balanced diet and regular exercise is equally important.
