Resilience in Health: When Doctors Don't Give Up

As someone who has faced critical health challenges, I have personally experienced instances where the very individuals who were supposed to provide help, seemed to have given up on me. However, my story also highlights the resilience of the human body and the role of persistence both from patients and healthcare providers. In this article, I will share my experiences and insights on when doctors might appear to give up and what can be done to overcome these challenges.

Doctor's Reluctance: The First Encounter with Severe Jaundice

Thirty-five years ago, I was hospitalized due to severe jaundice, right quadrant pain, nausea, and lethargy. My condition required extensive diagnostic tests, yet I faced a disheartening reality. The attending physician, who had the privilege of working at the private hospital, discovered that I lacked health insurance to cover the costs of these diagnostic procedures. He discharged me immediately, telling me to seek care elsewhere. This action, known as 'dumping,' is actually illegal, especially when dealing with critically ill patients who may not survive.

The Power of Persistent Advocacy

Despite being dismissed by the first physician, my friend insisted that I receive proper care. Fortunately, his influence led me to another physician who provided the necessary treatment, including several weeks of hospitalization for Hepatitis C. The first physician, not only continues to practice but also has a lucrative position as the official sports doctor for the local school district, as did his father before him. This experience underscores the importance of patient advocacy and the potential consequences of negligence in healthcare.

Doctors' Lack of Understanding: Severe Sepsis and Organ Failure

Another significant experience occurred about fifteen years ago when I developed sepsis, a condition universally recognized as extremely difficult to survive and without a clear treatment path. In an attempt to reduce costs and comply with insurance regulations, I was discharged from the hospital and admitted to a nursing facility. This was a critical juncture where the hospital and insurance company seemed to have 'given up' on me, insisting that my body could no longer fight the sickness.

The Role of Unconventional Recovery

However, against all odds, my body's immune system gradually strengthened over the following months. Slowly but surely, it battled the sepsis, and eventually, I made a full recovery. This experience taught me that doctors, while instrumental, are not the sole healers. G-d is often the true healer, and medical professionals are merely the vessel through which divine intervention can occur. Thus, it is crucial to maintain hope and persevere, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable medical challenges.

Never Giving Up Hope

Despite these experiences, I can confidently say that no doctor has ever truly given up on me. However, I do acknowledge that healthcare providers often lose hope and abandon the treatment plan when they lack a clear remedy. Patients must be persistent and advocate for their own health. As one patient, I have been a 'pain in the ass,' but this persistence has ultimately led to positive outcomes.

Conclusion

The stories I've shared highlight the deep-seated challenges and the sometimes stark realities of medical care. However, they also reinforce the importance of resilience in both the face of illness and the tireless determination of medical professionals. By understanding these dynamics, patients can better advocate for themselves, ensuring that they receive the care they need and deserve.
