How to Respond if You Are Being Followed by a Suspicious Vehicle

It can be unsettling and even concerning when you suspect a car is following you. The situation can range from mere paranoia to a genuine threat. Learn how to handle such incidents and ensure your safety in this content.

What to Do if You Suspect a Suspicious Vehicle is Following You

If you think you are being followed, there are several steps you can take to ensure your safety:

Drive to the Police Station: The most direct way to address the issue is to drive to the nearest police station. This is a reliable method as police can help assess the situation and take appropriate action. Make Three Left or Right Turns in a Row: If you are uncomfortable driving directly to a police station, you can try making three left or right turns in a row. If the vehicle continues to follow you, it's a clear sign that you are being followed, and you should proceed to a police station.

A Personal Perspective on Handling Follows

From my experience, I often advise people to start yelling if they encounter a suspicious vehicle following them. Yelling can often deter a potential threat. Additionally, approaching the car to assess its driver gives you a better understanding of the situation and can help you determine whether it's a genuine concern or just a simple case of mistaken identity.

However, it's important to note that persistent following is often indicative of Federal agents (FED) conducting a surveillance operation. The cost and risk of prosecution can often make them selective on whom they target. Sometimes, the target of the FED is someone with mental health issues, as the process can be time-consuming and expensive. There is also an obligation to provide help, which can be a significant burden on the personnel and the process.

Document the Incident

One of the most effective ways to address a potential follow is to document the incident. Video record the vehicle if possible. Capture the license plates, vehicle make, model, and color. Note the driver if possible. Having this information can provide crucial evidence for law enforcement to use in investigating the situation.

Consider turning right four times. This can often result in the vehicle following you disappearing. If the vehicle still follows you, contact the police immediately. If the police are following you due to a mistaken identity, they will likely be far back and may switch cars, so you may not be aware of their presence.

Finding Safety

Once you are at a police station, report the incident to the authorities. The police can investigate the matter and provide you with the necessary support. If the police are indeed following you due to a mistaken identity, they should be able to address the situation.

Head to the nearest police station or fire station if you are being followed. If you are indeed being followed, the perpetrator will likely disappear quickly, especially if they are not a law enforcement agent.

Remember, paranoia can sometimes lead to unnecessary worry. However, it is important to take appropriate safety measures if you feel genuinely threatened.
