Examining Faith and Healing: A Christian Perspective on Incurable Diseases

Dealing with an incurable disease can be one of the most trying experiences a person can face. For Christians, the question often arises: if you pray to God for healing from an incurable condition and never receive it, would you lose faith in Him?

No, I would not stop believing in God just because I do not receive physical healing. Such a perspective reflects an arrogance that would assume God’s existence means He must meet all our desires. It is also illogical to believe that physical healing is always the greatest demonstrations of God’s mercy and love.

The Mortality of Humans and the Hope of Heaven

Awareness of our mortality is a universal truth, one that Christians face with the additional hope of eternal life in Heaven. Christian teachings emphasize that suffering on Earth is temporary, while the joys of Heaven are eternal and unimaginably greater. The loss of a loved one, like the tragic early death of my oldest daughter to breast cancer, teaches us that pain and struggles are not the ultimate determinants of our existence. While it was a tragic loss, her death also brought her relief from pain and sorrow.

Inconsistencies in Miracles, Healings, and Prayers

It is important to acknowledge that God operates in mysterious ways and His actions are not always consistent with our human expectations. Miracles, healings, and answers to prayers can vary greatly. Christians must trust God’s wisdom and understand that the ultimate goal is to glorify Him, not to attain personal comfort.

Living with Incurable Conditions

Dying from an incurable disease is a reality faced by both Christians and non-Christians alike. Christians, however, approach this with a different mindset. They have the humility to ask for prayer, not to demand answers. Prayer is fundamentally about communication, and sometimes the answer is no, which can be difficult to accept. However, this perspective provides a framework for understanding and accepting suffering with faith.

Humility and Forgiveness

Lates rites, prayers, and the celebration of life are important practices within the Christian tradition. These rituals affirm the belief in forgiveness and the hope of a better future. They also highlight the human inclination to fear loss and the mortal condition, but Christians believe in a future of joy and love in the presence of God.

As someone experiencing severe, constant pain, I understand that God’s will is not always about immediate comfort. Reflecting on biblical figures like Paul and the countless missionaries who have faced and endured pain, I embrace the reality that suffering is part of our journey towards a glorious future. Losing faith over such circumstances would be a form of arrogance and a failure to see the bigger picture of God’s plan.

Hallelujah, for it is in the midst of suffering that we can find faith, trust, and ultimately, the hope of something infinitely better.
