Encounters with Stupidity as a Nurse
Encounters with Stupidity as a Nurse
Working in healthcare can be a challenging and sometimes frustrating experience, especially when dealing with patients who make decisions that can end up in serious, often avoidable, situations. Here are a few anecdotes that highlight the extent of the challenges nurses face every day.
1. Lithium Overdose
One patient came to us suffering from lithium overdose. The patient had taken 14 pills in one sitting because he thought it was the same as taking 7 on two separate days. He had ignored his doctor's instructions and put himself in a risky situation. The patient's mistake highlighted the importance of instructions and patient compliance in healthcare.
2. Sepsis and an Abandoned House
Another patient was admitted for sepsis without any proper explanation of his condition. It turned out that he had taken dark brown crystals from a drug dealer's safe house, an abandoned house without electricity or water. The patient had stolen and injected these crystals, mistaking them for legal drugs. The reality was harsh: the crystals were urine from a dried out urinal. This sad story underscores the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of proper sanitation and hygiene practices.
3. Heroin and Surgery
A covid patient had the audacity to use a bag of heroin laced with who knows what in the bathroom right before surgery. This incident is a clear example of the risks patients take when combining substances and medical procedures, leading to severe and sometimes fatal outcomes. The patient's actions not only endangered their health but also the safety of the medical team.
4. Refusal to Take Pills
A stubborn and stupid patient refused to take the prescribed pills because he believed they were not helping him, and upon breaking the capsules in half, the contents were revealed as a white powder. The patient's misunderstanding of medication instructions is a common issue, especially in healthcare settings where patients may not fully understand the importance and correct usage of their prescriptions.
5. Online Communities of Drug Abuse
Online communities, such as the Quora space called 'We Love Drugs', showcase the reality of drug abuse in real-time. Each post represents a future ICU admission and highlights the continuous cycle of addiction and the need for proper treatment and support.
Working as a nurse is a noble profession, but it also comes with its share of challenges. These stories illustrate the importance of clear communication, patient education, and the need for better support systems to help patients make safe and informed decisions.
