Personal Journey

My name is [Author's Name] and I have been battling chronic pain and illness for over 34 years. My journey began in 1990 when I became a new mother. This unexpected stress, combined with fatigue, led to a series of medical tests. In 1996, I received a positive ANA result, suggesting possible lupus, and was referred to a rheumatologist. After a series of diagnoses, including fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis, I have learned to adapt and manage my condition with the help of my family and various therapeutic techniques.

Adapting to Flares

Flare-ups can be unpredictable, but strategic adjustments are crucial. I have found that breaking activities into segments, resting for 10 minutes between each segment, is highly effective. This approach not only manages my pain but also helps me accomplish tasks. On days when the pain is exceptionally severe, I rely on my family and friends for assistance. For instance, my husband has washed and styled my hair during particularly tough times, and I occasionally hire a house cleaner to help with household chores.

Maintaining Mental and Physical Health

Mental well-being is just as important as physical health. I keep stress levels down by engaging in Epsom salt baths, water exercise classes, and massage therapy. An anti-inflammatory diet also plays a pivotal role in managing inflammation and reducing pain. Mindfulness practices such as relaxation techniques and meditation are vital tools in coping with chronic pain.

Admitting to Needing Help

A key hurdle in managing chronic illness is the willingness to admit when help is needed. For me, it took many years of struggling alone before I realized that asking for assistance would be beneficial. Coping strategies, whether it be adopting an adaptive rhythm, seeking professional help, or asking for support from loved ones, are all part of the process.

Adapting to New Diagnoses

Most recently, my diagnosis has expanded to include rheumatoid arthritis and an ANA test result indicating a relapse of lupus. Despite the complexity of my condition, many of the same coping skills remain effective. The most significant challenge is acknowledging when I need help and seeking it without hesitation. My family has been an invaluable support system, helping me navigate daily tasks and emotional challenges.

Seeking support and admitting when help is needed is crucial. My husband, family, and friends have been an integral part of my journey. Without their support, my struggles would be even more daunting. It's vital to keep your spirits up during difficult times and to not feel like a burden to those who care about you.
